The technologies are part of nLIGHT’s suite of products that support enhanced weld quality and quality assurance.

CAMAS, Wash.—Aiming to provide the rapidly growing e-mobility market with access to superior laser welding technologies, nLIGHT, Inc., has developed a suite of products that support enhanced weld quality and quality assurance, which are critical to the successful manufacturing of batteries and battery systems, the company said in a release.

The developer and producer of high-power semiconductor and fiber lasers recently introduced two new products—WELDForm and Automatic Parameter Tuning (APT)—that are designed to meet the dynamic requirements of advanced battery manufacturing customers. At the time of this writing, the company was scheduled to launch the products at this fall’s Battery Show North America in Detroit.

“WELDForm provides melt pool stabilization to reduce spatter and defects in laser welding and enable consistent weld penetration and weld profile control for high performance welding,” nLIGHT stated in the release. “APT is an AI-based solution that utilizes nLIGHT Plasmo’s process observer technology to enable the automated development of first-time-right system settings for the detection of welding defects, saving significant time and costs.”

Headquartered in Camas, nLIGHT provides high-power semiconductor and fiber lasers for use in markets that include industrial, microfabrication, aerospace, and defense.
