Markem-Imaje’s new marking and coding system can be used for product identification and traceability, and it is suited for a range of high-density and delicate materials, the company said.

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill.—A new 5-watt UV laser printer introduced by Markem-Imaje is reported to be capable of rapid coding for traceability, delivering advanced text messages, logos, and complex 2D codes. The powerful UV printer is “engineered to provide exceptional marking speed for fast, demanding applications,” the company said in a release.

Markem-Imaje, a wholly owned subsidiary of the U.S.-based Dover Corporation,  is a global  manufacturer of product identification and traceability products that include inkjet, thermal transfer, laser, and print-and-apply label systems.

Markem-Imaje’s SmartLase UV500 complements the company’s CO2 and fiber laser portfolio. It is described in the release as being “well suited for high-density and delicate materials, including hard plastics, recyclable films, metal, and glass.”

“Virtually maintenance-free, the SmartLase UV500 helps reduce operational expenses by reducing line stoppages and removing added costs like expensive consumables or external cooling,” the release stated. “Meanwhile, its chemical-free production helps businesses achieve sustainability compliance goals, and its permanent codes protect against counterfeiting.”

According to Markem-Imaje, the SmartLase UV500 is Industry 4.0-optimized and offers a variety of industrial interfaces, such as Ethernet/IP, PROFINET, and NGPCL. It is also reported to have full-featured CoLOS® software support capacity, allowing for accurate, smart, and optimized message design and data management across the factory from a remote location, the company said in the release.

The SmartLase UV500 is designed for challenging manufacturing environments and is reported to offer ingress protection up to 55. “The laser meets the very highest standard of safety for E-stop and interlock circuits integration per ISO 13849-1 up to Performance Level Ple,” the company said.
